Purpose: Smoking can cause insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and chronic inflammatory states. It is also related with metabolic syndrome, coronary artery disease and cardiovascular diseases. We studied the relationship between
smoking and metabolic syndrome. And we assessed the cardiovascular risk of smoking by observing high sensitivity
C reactive protein (hs-CRP) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) which are indices of inflammation and oxidative
stress.
Methods: Medical check-ups were performed on people over the age of 40 years old, 1,852 men at a university
hospital health care center in Korea between April, 2009 and December, 2010. Medical check-up data were divided
by their history of smoking into three groups: non-smoker (<5 pack years), low smoker (<20 pack years) and high
smoker (?20 pack years). The relationship between smoking and metabolic syndrome, smoking and hs-CRP, GGT
was calculated by ANOVA, Chi-square test, ANCOVA and multiple logistic regression analysis.
Results: Prevalence of metabolic syndrome was significantly higher in smokers (p<0.001). All the components of the metabolic syndrome except for high blood pressure were more prevalent in smokers. Levels of serum hs-CRP and
GGT were higher in smokers.
Conclusion: There was higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome in smokers. It is essential to stop smoking as it is associated with higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.
